How to Add Color to Your Capsule Wardrobe (Without Losing Your Cool Neutrals)

How to Add Color to Your Capsule Wardrobe (Without Losing Your Cool Neutrals)

We all love the idea of a capsule wardrobe—less clutter, fewer decisions, and more effortless outfits. But let’s be honest: a lot of capsules out there are kind of... beige. If you're craving more color in your wardrobe without sacrificing versatility, you’re in the right place.

In my video (or if you choose to read see below), I’m showing you how to build a spring capsule that reflects your life and style—with flattering colors, thoughtful combinations, and a few stylist-approved tricks that make getting dressed fun again.

🌸 What Is a Capsule Wardrobe?

A capsule wardrobe is a small but mighty collection of clothes that mix and match seamlessly. It’s designed to simplify your life by making every item in your closet work harder.

A good capsule:

  • Includes around 20–30 versatile pieces (+ accessories, belts give it fun and style)

  • Reflects your actual lifestyle (not just Pinterest)

  • Can be broken down into mini-capsules: work, weekend, travel, events

🎯 Why Most Capsules Are Way Too Neutral

Beige, black, white, denim—we’ve all seen (and probably worn) them. Neutrals are great, but when your entire capsule is colorless, it can feel... uninspired.

Bringing in color doesn’t mean chaos. In fact, a well-chosen palette can make mixing and matching easier, not harder. The key is to be intentional about the colors you choose—and that starts with knowing your lifestyle and your personal palette.

of course, I have to mention, if you do decide to keep your clothes neutral, you can always bring in a pop with a belt! :--)

🎨 How to Choose Capsule Colors

Here’s my step-by-step method for choosing the right colors for your spring capsule wardrobe:

1. Start With Your Lifestyle

What’s your spring calendar look like? Work events, soccer sidelines, baby showers, travel? Your capsule should match your reality—not just your fantasy outfits.

2. Pick 1–2 Base Neutrals

These are your foundation pieces—think jackets, trousers, denim, skirts. Go with neutrals that pair well with everything: white, ivory, camel, navy, gray, black, or denim.

3. Choose 2–3 Accent Colors

Here’s where the fun begins. Choose shades that flatter your skin, hair, and eyes (P.S. if you’re not sure what flatters you, check out this color guide video). These accent colors should mix well with your neutrals and with each other. Pro tip: Stick to the same undertone family—cool or warm.

4. Embrace Monochromatic Moments

Wearing one color or tonal shades head to toe can look incredibly chic and elongating. A tonal set in blush, olive, or navy feels polished but approachable.

🧠 My Favorite Color-Pairing Hack

Not sure what colors go together? Don’t start in your closet—start with your surroundings.

Look around your home: a scarf you love, a throw pillow, a notebook cover... anything that already has colors you’re drawn to. If they work together in print or design, chances are they’ll look great on your body too.

For example: I have a notebook on my desk in pink, papaya, yellow, olive, aqua and warm cream—(what a combination, you might think. But it just makes me happy. And it works.  And yes, I’m using it as inspiration for my summer capsule. (But first, let’s master spring 😉)

👗 Example Color Combinations for Spring

Here are a few capsule color palettes to inspire you:

🧺 Soft Neutrals + Earthy Accents

Ivory, sand, sage, dusty rose

💎 Cool & Polished

White, denim, navy, lavender, cobalt

☀️ Warm & Happy

Camel, cream, rust, peach, soft yellow

Each of these gives you mix-and-match magic without sacrificing your personal style.

🛍️ Final Thoughts

Color doesn’t have to complicate your capsule—it can enhance it. Start with your lifestyle, build on neutrals that ground you, and layer in colors that make you feel vibrant and confident.

And remember: inspiration is everywhere. If a throw pillow sparks joy, maybe it’s your new favorite outfit waiting to happen.

💬 I'd love to know—what’s one color you’re excited to add to your spring capsule? Or have you ever built an outfit around a notebook or a piece of art? Tell me in the comments!
