How I Actually Switch My Closet for the Season (With a Little Chaos and a Lot of Coffee)

How I Actually Switch My Closet for the Season (With a Little Chaos and a Lot of Coffee)

Okay, let’s be real—there is nothing worse than opening your closet, needing to get dressed, and instantly feeling overwhelmed. You’re staring at sweaters when it’s 80 degrees out, digging through last year’s holiday dresses just to find that one sundress you swear you still own. Sound familiar?

That’s when I know it’s time. Time to switch over the closet. Because here’s the truth:

When your closet feels fresh and edited, getting dressed is 1000x easier. Decision fatigue? Poof, gone. You can actually see what you have, feel inspired, and stop wearing the same three things on repeat.

Now, some of you magical unicorns might have an extra closet or that dreamy under-bed storage. If that’s you—wow, living the dream.

But if you’re like me and even your “storage” is out of breath, you’ve got to get creative.

I visually split my closet into “current season” and “off season” sections. I tuck anything irrelevant as far out of sight as possible—yes, even if that means stacking storage bins like a precarious Jenga tower.

Here’s my actual process, straight from my own seasonal switch-out that I finally finished (after procrastinating for only three weeks…):

Step 1: The Great Closet Purge (a.k.a. Emotional Warfare)

This is the hardest part. I have to confess—I’m not great at letting go of clothes. I mean… maybe not full hoarder status, but I do have a stylist’s brain and a sustainable heart. I know I can make most things cute. I start imagining the outfit, the belt I’d add, the shoes, the imaginary event I’d wear it to. It’s exhausting. Sometimes I have to literally stop myself and say, “Girl, you haven’t worn this in 2 years. Let it go.”

But here’s the rule I try to follow: if I didn’t wear it this past season, I ask myself why. Was it uncomfortable? Did it not fit right? Did I totally forget I owned it? If it was a fit or comfort issue—into the donation pile it goes. If I forgot about it but still like it? Okay, it gets one more shot.

Step 2: Friend Gifting (My Favorite Sustainable Hack)

This might sound odd, but when I’m going through my closet, I literally see my friends in certain pieces. So I snap a pic, text them, and ask, “Do you like this? Would you wear it?” I don’t want to be that girl who pawns off her closet rejects (no one needs that energy), but if it’s in great shape and their style, why not give it a second life?

Bonus: I also send them outfit ideas and tell them I expect to see a selfie. I mean, obviously.

Step 3: The Sorting Game

Once I’ve purged (somewhat painfully), I sort everything into categories—dresses, tops, skirts, etc. Then comes the mini fashion show where I try stuff on again, just to make sure it still fits and feels good. Honestly, it’s like going shopping in my own closet. And yes, I do talk to myself during this part.

Step 4: The Boutique Rebuild

This is the fun part. I hang everything back up (velvet hangers only, thank you very much—trust me, they’re a game changer), fold what needs to be folded, and make it look cute. Color-coordinated. Boutique-like. Like I'm starring in an episode of The Home Edit. (Which I have rewatched multiple times to hype myself up for closet-cleaning days. No shame.)

If something doesn’t fit into my little visual scheme or throws off the vibe, I’m suddenly way more willing to part with it. There’s something magical about making your space look pretty—it makes everything feel new.

Extra Step: Mini Capsule Time

Even after my closet is “cleansed,” I still take a few minutes to create a mini capsule collection based on what’s on my calendar for the month. Why? Because I’m busy. And when I need to get ready fast, I don’t want to waste time flipping through everything I own. I also don’t want to fall into that dreaded outfit-repeat loop.

Plus—let’s be honest—I have a social life. And I like to mix it up. Fashion is fun. So I treat it that way.

A Quick Note on Storage (Moth Drama Prevention 101)

Now, while I personally don’t use vacuum-sealed bags, I know many of my clients swear by them—especially for keeping those dreamy, delicate sweaters safe from moths and dust. If you have the space and system for them, I say go for it. Just not part of my chaotic little setup...yet.

Closet Tips I Swear By:

  • Velvet hangers in one color = instant chic

  • Use baskets or bins for odds and ends (scarves, belts, emotional breakdowns… kidding, kind of)

  • Add a little scent (a lavender sachet or cedar block makes a difference)
Lavender Sachet – FARMERS Lavender Co.

  • Lighting helps—even a battery stick-on light can turn “meh” into ooh

So there you have it—my closet switch-up ritual, chaos and all. Is it always smooth? Nope. Do I occasionally get distracted and start styling outfits for imaginary vacations? Yes. But it’s worth it.

Because now when I walk into my closet, I feel inspired instead of overwhelmed.

And that, my friend, is the whole point. 💛
